2013 – Two Consecutive Watercolor Workshops with Evelyn Dunphy

http://www.evelyndunphy.com/

at

Milford House Wilderness Retreat,

one of Nova Scotia’s most historic lakeside retreats.

and

Kejimkujik National Park

Limited Size Groups

4 days – July 2-6th, 2013 – Arrive at Milford House by 4:00 pm on July 2. A welcoming reception in the main Lodge will begin at 5:00 pm. The workshop ends at 4:00 pm on the 6th.

“The Music of Watercolor, and How to Play It”

at Milford House Wilderness Retreat in beautiful southwestern Nova Scotia. A 4 day intensive course in watercolor techniques for beginners as well as artists who have some experience with watercolor but are interested in taking their work to a more advanced level and gain proficiency in methods of using the medium.

This goal of this workshop is to immerse each student in an exciting “hands on” experience using the “vocabulary” of techniques for using watercolor so that they may then express their own esthetic. Each day will be filled with demonstrations on many ways to apply watercolor to paper, how to create particular effects by using different techniques, have a concept for your painting, and “name” the thing you are trying to do which immediately sets you on the path to accomplishing your goal.

There will be adequate time planned between demonstrations for students to practice techniques, ask questions and gain proficiency. The course will also focus on constructing good value patterns, creating color studies that best suit the concept of the painting, and designing strong compositions.

Each day will end with a critique and conversation time which is intended to add to the instruction of the day. A critique is an opportunity to look at what we have done, see what is working, and where we may learn more.

Students who wish to take both workshops will receive a discount on the tuition.

July 7 – 11, 2013

A 4 day Plein Air Experience

at the Lakes of Milford House & Kejimkujik National Park, Milford House Wilderness Retreat in Nova Scotia.  We will also paint at two other locations that are nearby.

Students arrive at Milford House by 4:00 pm on July 7 th. A welcoming reception in the main Lodge will begin at 5:00 pm. The workshop ends at 4:00 pm on July 11th.

Rates for Each Workshop: All-inclusive, Lodging, Meals and Tuition – 4 Nights

One Student in a Private Two Bedroom Cabin: $1250.00

Two Students Sharing 2 Bedroom – One Bathroom Cabin: $910.00 each

A Couple (one non-painting partner): $1370.00. This includes 3 meals for student and breakfast and dinner for partner each day.

Should you choose to take both workshops, there is a 5% discount on tuition, and as that would mean a nine days stay, a weekly rate is also more economical than paying the daily rate. Please inquire with Milford House about the weekly rate. Their website address is http://milfordhouse.ca/

This workshop offers the opportunity to paint in one of the most beautiful areas of southwestern Nova Scotia; a variety of subjects is easily accessible, from lake views to streams, forests, waterfalls and wetlands.

Workshop enrollment is limited, allowing for much personal attention. There will be a daily demonstration, and the instructor will spend time with each student individually throughout the day. Demonstrations will be in watercolor; other mediums are welcome.

Plein air painting is exhilarating, and challenging! This workshop will teach you how to simplify shapes, exaggerate your passion, minimize the unessential, crop, compose, and build a strong composition that enables you to enjoy seeing pigments mix and dance on your paper. Be a poet rather than a reporter, paint light and color, and shadow, and develop your ability to really “see”.

Father’s Day Canoe Trip with The Legendary Milford House

The Milford House Classic Father’s Day Canoe Trip

3-Day Back Country Canoe Adventure

Experience Summary

Father’s Day Canoe Trip with The Legendary Milford House come paddle with the Legendary Milford House through it’s century old legacy of fully guided canoe tripping. Drenched in history and lore and balanced with masterful back country cuisine, this trip is designed to allow “the wilderness to welcome you, and teach you, and take you to its heart”. From beginners to seasoned paddlers, this trip is perfect for you!

Description

Your adventure will begin with a rendevous on the historic Milford House property where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trippers. Our guide will facilitate putting the final touches on packing, and after a delicious lunch we’ll take to the water to knock the rust off our paddling strokes. Soon we’ll load the canoes and slip away to the adventure that awaits.
Clear, dark waters and rocky shores melt away as we explore and paddle to our first night’s campsite. Along the way we’ll pick our course through the narrow stone-choked channel known as Pike’s Run. Over-hanging maples on the cusp of scarlet line the granite studded shores, creating a terrific opportunity for the photographic eye.
Once camp is set, our guide will begin to work their magic preparing a hearty back country-gourmet dinner, complete with something sweet to finish! Curl up around the soft glow of the evening fire and enjoy the fine art of Nova Scotian story telling, or perhaps a chapter from Albert Bigelow Paine’s charming book, ‘The Tent Dwellers’. Later, retire to your tent and let the lapping waves carry you away to a well deserved rest.

Rise with the mist rolling off the lake and the golden rays of the sun just cresting the treetops. You’ll be greeted with the tempting smell of a hot beverage while our guide prepares an amazing breakfast highlighting Nova Scotian culture and tradition. We’ll break camp, load the canoes and begin the day by navigating our way through the small narrows at the eastern end of Fisher Lake, known as Eleven Mile Runs.

We’ll explore Eleven Mile Lake’s deep coves and experience the Milford House’s iconic landscape. If the westerlies are in our favour, creating a canoe-sailboat is always a great option. Fleeting glimpses of the skilled kingfisher diving for prey will entertain as we start an early search for an island campsite. Once found, we’ll set up tents, then enjoy a colourful tapas-style lunch. Afternoon adventures could include honing paddling strokes with your guide, a certified Paddle Canada instructor, searching for chutes and pools for swimming in the headwaters of the Mersey River, or tracking down a long forgotten ranger cabin full of antiquity (and perhaps a little moss, too!). We’ll return to camp in time for our guide to craft another hearty meal. Relax and enjoy the smell of wood smoke and tempting aromas rising from the grill, or pitch in and help with the evening chores by fetching water or collecting firewood.

After dinner, kick back with a hot chocolate while roasting marshmallows over a perfect bed of embers. As the fire wanes and the campsite darkens, loose yourself in a night sky of endless stars as our guide describes Greek and Mi’kmaq constellations. Soon your tent beckons and you give in to a well deserved sleep.

An early start with a quick and delicious hot-breakfast will allow us to take advantage of the morning’s calm and serenity. Take turns using the map to lead the way back through the many islands and glacial erratics. We’ll find the perfect white sand beach to set-up for our last lunch. After a tasty bite to eat, and perhaps a quick swim, we’ll continue our last leg back to the Milford House, arriving mid-afternoon.

Our three-day canoe adventure takes full advantage of the Legendary Milford House property, back country and the stunning landscape of southwest Nova Scotia. Join us and you’ll soon understand why many return decade after decade.
“Where the trail leads back from the water’s edge—
Tangled and overgrown—
Shoulder your load and strike the road
Into the deep unknown.”
Albert Bigelow Paine
