Experimental Works by Jane Seary: July 22 – October 9

Modern cultures have promoted the alienation of people from their natural environment. This human/nature dichotomy encourages a disassociation from the natural world and thus prevents the critical development of a proactive ecological consciousness.

Although an ecological whole is greater than the sum of its parts, deliberate segmentation of a land – scape into individual components compels the artist to develop an intimate relationship with, and therefore an appreciation for, the intricacies of nature. An acknowledgement and interpretation of

beauty and natural form and function is inherent in art inspired by nature.

An incorporation of both realism and abstraction, Elements: A Delineation of Nature is an exploration of some of nature’s components.

Jane Seary was born in Northumberland County, Ontario. She is a year-round resident on Grand Lake, N.S. Sources of inspiration for her work include an academic background in anthropol – ogy, biology and environmental sciences, in addition to knowledge and practice of primitive skills and survival, learned indigenous knowledge of the natural world, and experience as a wilderness guide. Jane works experimentally with a variety of mediums including graphite, watercolour, charcoal, conté, natural fibres and dyes, and Japanese papers. Her longstanding love and respect for the natural world have predominantly influenced her artistic expression of all chosen mediums.

Selected works from “Elements: A Delineation of Nature” are on display at Milford House,

5296 Route 8, South Milford, NS, from July 22 – October 9, 2017. An artist’s opening will be held Saturday July 22, 4 to 7 p.m.

On Saturday, July 16th Mike will be here launching his latest book, we will have some available for sale.

Nebooktook, which in the Mi’kmaw language means “in the woods”, is an eclectic mix of history, heritage, ideology, nostalgia, philosophy, poetry, and prose. Set in Nova Scotia, the more than three hundred early twentieth century images appearing here could just as easily have been taken in any number of wilderness areas stretching from the Adirondacks to the Rockies. The book’s message is equally timeless and universal, spanning centuries and drawing upon scores of voices from a variety of disciplines and professions. Nebooktook is meant to be reflective, introspective, meditative and thought-provoking, celebrating the traditions, natural beauty and intrinsic values of our woods and waters while decrying the calculated, self gratifying attitudes, doctrines, and practices that wantonly destroy and pollute the land, poison the water and foul the air in the name of progress and pursuit of the omnipotent dollar.

Opening Weekend May 20 – 23, 2016

Come join us for our traditional ‘work’ weekend, with light chores to help us get ready for 2016.  We have decks and steps to paint, plant boxes to fill and trails to groom. Out two ‘baby barns’ need a coat of paint as well. We will have something for everyone, any skill level, any energy level.

We are all moved in to our new lodge as of last July, if you haven’t had chance to visit us yet, now is a great time!

A free lunch will be provided on Saturday for the volunteer work crews.

Come and give us a hand, and take advantage of 3 nights for the price of 2!!!
