Modern cultures have promoted the alienation of people from their natural environment. This human/nature dichotomy encourages a disassociation from the natural world and thus prevents the critical development of a proactive ecological consciousness.

Although an ecological whole is greater than the sum of its parts, deliberate segmentation of a land – scape into individual components compels the artist to develop an intimate relationship with, and therefore an appreciation for, the intricacies of nature. An acknowledgement and interpretation of

beauty and natural form and function is inherent in art inspired by nature.

An incorporation of both realism and abstraction, Elements: A Delineation of Nature is an exploration of some of nature’s components.

Jane Seary was born in Northumberland County, Ontario. She is a year-round resident on Grand Lake, N.S. Sources of inspiration for her work include an academic background in anthropol – ogy, biology and environmental sciences, in addition to knowledge and practice of primitive skills and survival, learned indigenous knowledge of the natural world, and experience as a wilderness guide. Jane works experimentally with a variety of mediums including graphite, watercolour, charcoal, conté, natural fibres and dyes, and Japanese papers. Her longstanding love and respect for the natural world have predominantly influenced her artistic expression of all chosen mediums.

Selected works from “Elements: A Delineation of Nature” are on display at Milford House,

5296 Route 8, South Milford, NS, from July 22 – October 9, 2017. An artist’s opening will be held Saturday July 22, 4 to 7 p.m.
